Lanzarote: Conservation and the Environment.
In 1993 the island of Lanzarote was declared a world biosphere by UNESCO. This recognition is one of the driving forces behind the environmental lobby on the island. With this in mind we the owners of Villasun have made the conscious decision to adopt a greener outlook in the presentation of our properties.
Lanzarote produces a large percentage of its electricity from renewable sources. Around the island you will find wind farms. The largest of which is situated at Parque Eólico de Lanzarote overlooking the coast at Arrieta.
Our Villas
Hot Water: This is primarily driven by solar power. We have a timed and thermostatically controlled electrical boost before you wake up in the morning and last thing in the afternoon. This gives the system the best opportunity to pick up as much of the solar energy available during the day. Most other systems would be on electric all day and night, not ours. Pool Heating: Again the primary heating system for all of our private pools is driven by solar power. This is electronically controlled to maintain a higher and lower temperature band thermostatically controlled by heat sensors on the roofs of our property. Solar valves switch on when there is sufficient heat available for the pool, switching off so not to cool the water when the surrounding temperature drops. Only when there is no solar heat available and our minimum temp is reached will our electrical heating start up. In fact during say mid march/April until Nov the electrical heating would never switch on.
Even our electrical pool heating is state of the art. We use heat pump technology. This recovers heat from the surrounding air and does not rely on any sunshine. For the technically minded it is a simple fridge working backwards. The black radiator on the rear of a fridge gets warm/hot; this is the heat we use.
In late 2006 and early 2007 all of our swimming pools will have been converted to Natural Chlorine. We use the absolute minimum of chemicals in all of or pools, helping the environment and you our clients.
Again for the technically minded we use nothing simpler than natural Sea Salt, bought locally with all the sea’s minerals. A concentration of only 10% of that of sea water is run through a separation cell. This splits the natural chlorine away for the sodium; the chlorine is in gas form and is dissolved in the pool water. After a while the chlorine will recombine with the sodium in the pool water to be re-pumped around the system to be re-used. Salt does not evaporate. The system also uses less electricity than a small light bulb.
Benefits: A vast reduction in “Stinging eyes”, ear and nose problems. This is after all sea water but with only 10% of the salt you can hardly taste it, in fact less than a human tear drop. Your skin will feel better and your swimwear will not be bleached to the same extent. Health & safety concerns for you the client and our pool staff are greatly reduced as the handing of chemicals is reduced to a minimum. The system is automatic and produces the correct amount of chlorine continually, every day. Electricity: A standard electricity supply for any villa style property on Lanzarote is 5.5 kilowatt. Not much considering a standard UK terraced type house will have 20/25 Kilowatt available. This low power availability is the main driving force behind all our conservation methods. In line with this we use where possible energy saving appliances and bulbs.
Recycling: Dotted around the resort you will find 4 types of recycling bins. We encourage all clients to do there bit. The standard green bin (larger UK style) is for general waste. The grey bin with blue stripe (big letter box) is for newspapers, magazines and proper cardboard product only. The yellow bin (upside down bell) is for all Metals & Tins, Plastic, Milk & Juice cartons. The green bin (upside down bell) is for all glass products. |
